Hamburg premiere of a key film of Black Independent Cinema in the 1990s by Ayoka Chenzira and Cinema premiere of a short film by Hamburgbased Filmmaker Tatiana Calasans!

Alma's Rainbow (US 1994, Ayoka Chenzira, 89 Min., OV) is a key film of Black Independent Cinema in the 1990s, which has only gained wider distribution since 2022! Teenager Rainbow Gold tries to escape the strict constraints of her Christian school and her strict mother Alma. She doesn't understand why she has to choose between her tomboy look, which she wears when performing in a hip-hop dance group, and a more feminine appearance. She begins to grapple with societal ideals of beauty and women's (lack of) rights over their own bodies.

To kick things off, we will be showing an exclusiv Hamburg short film on Saturday, 6.9.:
